Police Chase, Fatal Shooting On Sunrise Highway In Massapequa Prompts State Investigation

A police pursuit and fatal officer-involved shooting on a Long Island highway is the subject of a New York State Attorney General’s Office investigation.

The incident happened on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa on Friday, Sept. 20.

According to the AG’s office, officers with the NYPD, along with Freeport and Nassau County Police, were involved in a vehicle pursuit through Queens and Nassau counties.

The chase ended when the suspect, Jeremy Bennett, stopped his car on the highway. During the ensuing encounter, officers opened fire, striking the man.

Bennett, whose age and hometown were not given, later died at the hospital.

No other details were given. Daily Voice has reached out to the police agencies involved for comment.

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, the New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) opened an investigation into the shooting. Such an inquiry is standard procedure for all incidents in which a police officer may have caused a person’s death.

“If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident,” the agency said.
